Elementalist is a reactive audiovisual collaboration between dancers and Digital Media designers at Drexel University, created as part of the broader project Isolated Articulations. This work explores the interplay between human movement, digital transformation, and the elemental forces of nature.
Developed during the height of pandemic isolation, Isolated Articulations reflects on the body’s capacity for expression in moments of distance and disconnection. Within this framework, Elementalist channels the rhythms of nature—its cycles, disruptions, and renewals—into a performative dialogue between the physical and the digital. Dancer Jenna Demerinteracts with generative visual stimuli that respond in real time to her motion, creating fluid echoes of her gestures through light, form, and sound.
Using TouchDesigner and Isadora, the piece layers live video with computational effects to build an immersive, ever-changing environment. Each movement becomes both a cause and an effect, shaping and being shaped by digital phenomena. The work blurs the boundary between natural and artificial systems, suggesting that creativity—like nature itself—emerges through cycles of transformation, resistance, and renewal.
