The mimic

Conceptual framework////

Exhibited Digital Twin Exhibition, August 19-October 4, 2025

Pearlstien Gallery

In contrast to digital twins that replicate our world through data, “The mimic” presents a being that exists through pure observational power. It imitates you. It watches you. It has no profile, yet it recognizes your presence. They observe, wait, and respond—simulating proximity, empathy, and agency. The installation positions these figures as uncanny twins—embodiments of the digital gaze and an embodied presence in absence. The piece critiques how digital systems reduce us to traceable bodies, while remaining largely invisible themselves. These figures are not designed to be human, but to appear human enough. The work also references the phenomenon of being seen—what it feels like to be looked at by something you cannot fully explain.

Project description////

The project is multi-screen installation that explores how machine is embodied as unidentified figure performs the role of a digital twin—not by replicating your data, but by mimicking your body. Three vertical screens feature AI-generated humanoid figures. Each screen embodies a diEerent variation of "you," rehearsing gestures, postures, and patterns of behavior as though it’s learning to become human. These figures are not static. Each reacts to the presence of the viewer through motion detection, responding in subtle yet haunting ways—simulating awareness, attention, and even recognition. Their gaze, movement, and stillness are not autonomous, but triggered by you.
